A photo of a grade school class in the south in the late-1800s. If you notice no one is smiling.

Is that a little black girl in the front row second from right? Post Civil war Pre-Jim Crow?

Those kids are anywhere between 6 and 60 years old.

Interesting, although some look to possibly be suppressing a smile..."All right children, one...two...three...frown!"

Some of these children look downright angry. And for some you can see the misery already moulded and set permanently into the musculature of their faces like they’d been carrying their burdens for 60 years already. But my favorite is this little boy who you knew was the sassy class troublemaker, even had to be sat right in front of the teacher.

have you seen a million ways to die in the west it's dumb silly but there's a funny bit about them gossiping about somebody smiling in their photo 🤣 (it's olden days)

I think in the 1800s people didn’t smile for photographs. It look a long time to physically take the photo and it’s not easy to hold a smile for 5 mins: if you move it goes blurry Two other reasons given here upon my search for a source are people had worse teeth and photos were more serious People don’t smile in painted portraits historically either https://history.nebraska.gov/why-so-serious-3-reasons-why-you-never-see-a-smile-in-old-photographs/
