When I was growing up, I loved playing video games. Many of these games also had a powerful impact on my worldview and intellectual development. A few of the old games and series that I loved most, and still think about occasionally, are Fallout 1 and 2, Age of Empires, Civilization by Sid Meier, Total War, Starcraft, Panzer General, X-Com, The Legend of Zelda, NBA 2K, and innumerable more. These games had a magic to them that allowed you to disappear into a different world. And I would argue that it was not a frivolous pastime. Games are an immersive way to learn about history and culture. Playing Civilization really made you curious about what these "civilizations" really were, and did more to pique my later interest than simply being told they were important by someone else. These days I find with regret that I don't have much time to play games. Work, family life, and study take up a lot of time. But I have my eye on the news that a new Civilization game is coming and am going to make time for that.

my initial interest in history was from video games, when i was in high school I got an A on a revolutionary war test in APUSH by grinding Assassins Creed III - (CIV also was great for this)

If you like Civilization, you should really read Sid Meier's Memoir. A fascinating, light read on how he brought his games to life. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50489373-sid-meier-s-memoir

For me shooter games consumed most of my time, but don’t get me wrong Phantasy Stay Online and Final Fantasy did the same and were great new worlds to explore. I’ve recently started playing again with my kids after 15 years. Not a bad idea to pick up the controller again.

Dune! As an adult I played IL-2 Sturmovik more hours than I’d like to admit. (Yes, I would totally leave everything but my family if I could fly a Spitfire for a living.)

Based on the games you’ve listed @mazmhussain you should try Crusader Kings 3. I think you’ll like it.

Fallout is an epic game. I grew up with the early MMO’s, EverQuest was my favorite.
