imo the points meta emerged as a result of a lack of regulatory clarity that made many products/protocols afraid to issue a token offchain points are a total step backwards for both users and protocols

Totally! It is also much more flexible to "iterate" than a onchain token.. "Onchain" points only works if some build a extreme expressive set of features..

fair point but it did help a lot of products to get a fair amount of traffic ultimately resulting in better products
