I loved 3 body, especially the sequels, but didn't love reading Dune :P I think it's because of my preference for harder sci-fi over character development.

If your dislike for 3 Body was informed by the hollow characters, Dune will be a better read.

Yeah the first half of the first book is a grind. Took the "show don't tell" of Trisolaris a bit too far. 

But it gets better, MUCH better. Dark Forest broke my brain, and Death's End did it again, but on an even larger scale.
