I’m sure of it. Things made in the past were built to last a lifetime. What they make now seems to have an expiration date. My dad has a very old sticker album, and your post reminded me of it.

Hmmm, I imagine there are probably many reasons for this. But perhaps one of those reasons, is that companies are always looking to cut costs. And unfortunately they don't see the value in investing in good design. Which is so unfortunate.

I think humanity, in general, has become lazy.

The transition happens Sci-fi went from utopic to dystopic.

Thinking big and positive sum takes effort, where as dystopia less so. 
Bottom line is: sci-fi got lazy
