In 1919, General Electric founded the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) to promote international radio. General Electric used RCA as its division to sell radios until 1930, when it was spun off from General Electric. RCA itself quickly became an industrial giant. General Electric has a long history of working with turbines in the field of power generation. The company introduced the first turbochargers during World War I and continued to develop them during the interwar period, so they became essential in the years leading up to World War II. General Electric also worked on Frank Whittle's designs during the war and introduced Whittle's jet engines to the United States in the 1940s. This led to the founding of GE Aviation, now the world's largest engine manufacturer, second only to Rolls-Royce plc of Great Britain, which pioneered the design and manufacture of reliable, innovative, and efficient engines.

Born in New York, Rockefeller was known in America for his wealth and public philanthropy. He was the founder of the Standard Oil Company. His fortune in 1913 was estimated at $900 million, equivalent to $418 billion and 2% of the total US economy in 2019 (estimated by Forbes magazine). He is also known as the first American billionaire, having achieved a fortune of $1 billion on September 29, 1916. He began his career at the age of 16 and founded his first company three years later. In 1862, he turned to the oil industry. After taking over his most serious local competitor, Rockefeller set about creating a national company with a national distribution network. He owed his success to Standard Oil, which by 1879 controlled 90% of oil refining in the United States. Rockefeller stepped down from management of his company in 1897, although he remained chairman of the board until 1911. In that year, the U.S. government finally ordered the liquidation of Standard Oil.

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. He was a politician and the third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He died on July 4, 1826, in Monticello, Virginia. He is also the founder, along with James Madison, of the Democratic-Republican Party, which dominated American politics for a quarter of a century. He was also the Governor of Virginia (1779–1781) during the Civil War, the first Secretary of State (1789–1793), and the second Vice President of the United States (1797–1801). He was an advocate of the separation of religion from politics and the author of the Virginia Freedom Act. Jefferson is also the founder of the University of Virginia. In 1752, he attended a local school run by William Douglass. He began studying French, Latin, and Greek at the age of nine. In 1757, when he was fourteen, his father died, leaving him 20 acres of land and a large number of slaves.
