Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. He was a politician and the third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He died on July 4, 1826, in Monticello, Virginia.
He is also the founder, along with James Madison, of the Democratic-Republican Party, which dominated American politics for a quarter of a century. He was also the Governor of Virginia (1779β1781) during the Civil War, the first Secretary of State (1789β1793), and the second Vice President of the United States (1797β1801). He was an advocate of the separation of religion from politics and the author of the Virginia Freedom Act. Jefferson is also the founder of the University of Virginia.
In 1752, he attended a local school run by William Douglass. He began studying French, Latin, and Greek at the age of nine. In 1757, when he was fourteen, his father died, leaving him 20 acres of land and a large number of slaves. 0 reply
