agree with all of you that from economic POV she makes more than MJ but I don't think she's as famous as he was.

my dad asked me this question while we were at the concert in LA it was such a bizarre experience (attending as mainly indifferent bystanders) no one I surround myself would claim her as their fav artist though…i have been trying to understand it since, even watched her documentary, looking for the answers.

Probably, yeah. Advantaged some by inflation and the internet. Makes sense and well deserved. As global phenomenons go, Tay is one of my favorites.

i believe so, at least economically. the highest grossing tour in history was elton john at $939M (why he didn't do a few more shows to hit $1B will never make sense to me). there are rumors that she's on track to hit $2B (same with Bey), and she's doing so well she's giving $90M in bonuses to her tour crew.

This point strikes home to me. Met so many strangers and on so many dates where the immediate common music to listen to in the car is Taylor Swift.

I’d love to see some kind of attempt at measuring the “market share” of artists over time. I think the problem is intractable in many ways for many different reasons, not totally dissimilar to debating who is the best nba player of all time. Pretty interesting data + economics question
