I really resonate with the term "moat of low status" and it's how I've operated to my advantage. If I want to go for something, I don't care if the work is "lower status" or how others view me (e.g. joined Coinbase in a junior role unrelated to my work experience to get foot in the door, did grunt work on a documentary to learn the film world, etc) https://usefulfictions.substack.com/p/how-to-be-more-agentic

Thanks for sharing this, I had never heard this term before. I worked for a company in the HR tech/ learning space for 10 years and we talked a ton about how to stop seeing careers as ladders, and instead as rock walls or jungle gyms where you have to move sideways up and down. Then we’ve got the Chris Dixon essay about climbing the wrong hill The specific call out to status is a good reminder about what the experience feels like. And helpful to me as I find myself doing all kinds of administrative type work for gmfarcaster 🙃

After a year learning to code as a hobby and my startup failed, had to decide to go back to a management position with seniority or to start from zero as a dev. Chose the last, and I'm stocked to have learnt how things work "behind the scenes"!

yep!! one of the worst things to do is getting kicked back across it once you've crossed it but crossing it again gives you a certain kind of perspective that's invaluable

I could expand on this indefinitely What we can learn in every situation from anyone at any time. Right now I'm at that point where I am willing to go entry level just to prove my willingness to learn and I know it won't go unnoticed Congrats on this successful mindset and to many more triumphs over tribulations

I think it’s really cool to act this way. You’re truly in charge of this one and only life. Always having the courage to follow your heart and intuition is the best gift for ourselves.
