What’s todays equivalent of being a kid and getting to play with computers in the 80, 90s?

The interesting thing about this comparison is that in the 90s when I was playing with computers, I didn’t have to create an account or ask permission. In most cases, today’s “playing with computers” happens in the cloud and requires an account.

Being the director, producer, and star of their own content. This is a craft that is learned by doing and is such a big part of the future.

The easy answer is playing with AI tools, but I think that no-code game development platforms and easy-to-use music production software are pretty amazing for kids to tinker with now too.

In 80s/90s, "playing with computers" was really figuring out how to copy and play games + some basic coding. Today: using ChatGPT, making a website, talking to Alexa (before kids can read/type), photo/video editing, etc

if one defines the baseline measure as children being drowned in tech (consumption or creation), particularly mobile. then any unusual measurements would be those children that shun it and are not entangled with it. as tech was the fringe, now reality is the fringe.

💯 getting to play with computers. FOSS+permissionless systems, including Linux, Docker, pip/npm, deploying Next/React websites following tutorials, MidJourney (when it was free). They feel magical, like hand-typing computer programs from the back of a magazine in the 80s. or...posting, making vids, getting likes.
