Need some advice here. Thinking about getting a used car. Needs to be 4x4 and have a place to sleep. Thinking about F150s, GMC Sierras, 4Runners, Landcruisers, Quigley Conversions, and Toyota HiAces. I know Tacoma is the gold standard, but it’s bed is too small to sleep comfortably. Any thoughts?

I have a 1990 Toyota Pickup with 6ft bed that I’ve slept in comfortably for the last 14 years. I have a 2023 Tacoma with 5ft bed that is ok to sleep in with the tailgate down or by myself diagonally. It depends on the use case, I guess.

Tacoma extended cab and bed work well as a surf-mobile. My neighbor had one he slept in with a topper, boards slid under the bed platform.

Do you just want the space for somewhere to sleep or are you hauling/towing heavy things?

I would go the Toyota route. But other than that, I’ve heard good things about Sierras.

If you're 6'3" the quicker conversion van will probably be your ticket. Im not sure any half ton pick ups have long beds. Long bed F-250 would do it. Also don't rule out the awd sienna. I camp in a 2011 sienna but it's definitely not the go if you're doing a lot of off road camping.
