this seems true - related, punks specifically feel emblematic of a specific cypherpunkish ethereum L1 culture (stuff like terraforms, xcopy also fit here). the decline of $ETH the asset, and Ethereum L1 as an execution layer, has also led to the decline of this specific culture i think i used to think punks where like, the premier scarce cultural artifacts in crypto, but this no longer seems true to me, they are specifically the premier artifacts for *ethereum L1* so ETH L2s can "win", but if $ETH continues to underperform and people don't use the L1 then i'd still be bearish punks

cultural relevance of punks has nothing to do with ETH price imo. punks, xcopy and few others - are already beyond some of these chain games

i am skeptical, they’re already a lot less relevant today than they were a few years ago. they’re now viewed as boomer/ETH OG coded whereas they used to be viewed as cultural stewards across all crypto (imo) https://warpcast.com/six/0x6e44b437

yeah it might be better to think about chains as "games" (or digital worlds if you will) when everyone plays WoW (eth L1) and its the peak cultural discussion point that even seeps out into the mainstream, having the best sword (punk) is both high status and high financial value but when WoW is no more than 'one game of many', and perhaps even a bit blasé and boomerish, that sword is not as cool anymore, and its financial value too gradually diminish over time

First of all gotta say thank you for this reply. It gave me a ton of food for thought But also respectfully I believe you may be thinking too small There are for sure a lot of local (ie L2 or chain-contained) finite games in crypto, but the infinite games of collecting and creating art (I'm grouping punks with digital art here) are not only happening across all chains and L2s including right here on base but they have bridged the url <> irl divide Those "swords" people collected got us into the MoMa and on Miami beach and everywhere in between These crypto games are having real life impact. They've already made history and reshaped culture. It's also all right there onchain and supports all subsequent culture creation and infinite game participation across all chains. That's immutable history and will always retain value regardless of mkt price imo From my perspective crypto allows anyone to become a player in the game of life on a scale that the old systems simply couldn't support
