this seems true - related, punks specifically feel emblematic of a specific cypherpunkish ethereum L1 culture (stuff like terraforms, xcopy also fit here). the decline of $ETH the asset, and Ethereum L1 as an execution layer, has also led to the decline of this specific culture i think i used to think punks where like, the premier scarce cultural artifacts in crypto, but this no longer seems true to me, they are specifically the premier artifacts for *ethereum L1* so ETH L2s can "win", but if $ETH continues to underperform and people don't use the L1 then i'd still be bearish punks

in this way i *do* think L2s can be "parasitic" to the L1 because they are not just outsourcing execution/app layer but also outsourcing cultural stewardship.

cultural relevance of punks has nothing to do with ETH price imo. punks, xcopy and few others - are already beyond some of these chain games

If they are going to do nothing then CC0 is best. All of the benefits of proliferation with no risk to them making the wrong move with the IP since anyone can use it.

I think Punks can do well even if ETH doesn’t The current lens of punks being lame and ETH-coded is because the entire alt L1 industry is incentivized to make ETH cultures seem bad (feels like early “console wars”) Once ETH’s position is more stable I think people can look at it more objectively

are you saying the cultural impact of those scarce ethereum mainnet assets now are somehow begins and ends on mainnet now? or are you thinking something more specific tied to price?
