I suspect people who say they hate running should try walking for several months before trying running. Unless you're either aerobically gifted or already in good shape, any running speed will spike your heart rate uncomfortably high.

Also running is hell on your joints. I always recommend biking, elliptical, or water therapy as aerobic activity for people with joint problems and if you don’t have joint problems and can walk then absolutely do that.

Do you have any information on joint damage from running?

The studies are mixed. What they do suggest is that improper running form can lead to cartilage damage and new runners are also more likely to experience tendinitis and other inflammation (that could throw off form).
