How do you answer the question β€œWhere are you from?” As an immigrant who lived in a few countries I find it quite confusing. I assume that the person wants to quickly understand my language/cultural background, so go with β€œI’m originally from …, lived in A, B, C and now I live in X.”

I lived in illinois and florida growing up - for me it depends on who im talking to. By default I say chicago unless the person is from the florida area then i say that. My main reasoning is imo the average person will have more familiarity with chicago

As a current Chicago resident, when I meet other fellow Chicagoans I'm always like what's your neighborhood/intersection? I heard old school locals will say what's your high school? And old old people will ask what's your parish? πŸ˜‚

Because so many people (like me) are from the suburbs but say they are from the city

Yeah when I ask the neighborhood, the answers are so often a suburb (Naperville, etc.); and then I just sigh and move on πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ it's weird because growing up in a suburb I never said I'm from Tampa, FL; Id say I'm from near Tampa. But so many just cut the near and say Chicago.
