The idea that pluralism and freedom are opposites, rather than each a side of the same hand, is the most vital mistake in political understanding right now At some times this mistake is willed and at other times it’s unconscious - a belief that rights are zero sum and that restrictions won’t eventually harm you too

Hannah Arendt flagged it 50 years ago so it feels less like a mistake and more a kind of deliberate turn to the dark side. Too many people I _know_ are not ignorant of this idea have gone dark side for it to be mere ignorance or pure philosophical naïveté I like her terminology: sovereignty + mutualism/pluralism = freedom American libertarians conflate freedom and sovereignty but nearly always mean sovereignty

kind of wild society is drifting away from the post-WW2 dominant paradigm in the West that pluralism and freedom are complementary and politics again exploiting anti-pluralist sentiment as advantageous. it makes you wonder about collective memory, has it been to long ago? how many times repeat before we learn?
