Everyone gives Elon credit for Community Notes, but that was around long before he came on the scene. Community Notes used to be called Birdwatch and it was created in 2021. The maligned Twitter Trust and Safety department invented the idea; Elon just dumped gas on the fire.

I’ve actually never heard someone give Elon credit for creating Community Notes! Source that Trust and Safety department invented Birdwatch?

I sourced this post from the Wikipedia entry. It’s of course a team effort comprised of product, moderation teams, design and engineering to create a feature like that. But the Trust and Safety team certainly had influence and input and it was created under the old regime, not Elon.

We can quibble about the department and my wording all we want, but the point I’m trying to drive home is that people say all kinds of things about pre-Elon Twitter—bloated, biased, woke-captured—but it was that who was responsible for the idea, and we would not have what we celebrate today without their work.

I wouldn’t say either people go so far as to say “Elon invented this” but they associate the feature with his leadership as he expanded it and really put it on the front lines, more so than they do with the group that conceived it

Right, as I said, have never talked to/heard of someone who claims Elon created. 

Was just curious about specific claim that “maligned trust and safety department invented the idea.”
