One of the best things about America is that Americans don’t really have servant culture the same way as other places in the world Most well to do American families have servants too, but not like this — it’s not the same https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/16/world/africa/saudi-arabia-kenya-uganda-maids-women.html

This is usually noticed in the Arab Gulf countries like "UAE, KSA, Bahrain, etc...) and this is related to many factors, one of them owning huge amount of money that they think they can "buy" others, and also related to some psychological concept know as "white man Burden”, especially they come from Bedouins culture to civil culture and they always want to prove that they are better. Also it was something related to the culture of Bedouins before Islam who used to bury the baby if she is a girl and take slaves in wars and use them.

I understood how people were duped before social media, I partly grew up in Dubai and the standard practice for maids and construction workers to have their passports confiscated on arrival, and the first year or two is spent paying off their debt to the agent you got them the job But with information so freely available now, even in poorer communities, it is shocking that it keeps happening and people keep going despite it
