I have this one friend who I talk to on the phone a lot. I was telling them about how another friend of mine told me I shouldn't be able to vote (because I'm childless) In reply he asked me why I wanted to vote so bad anyways. "Why do you need to be enfranchised this way?" I didn't really have a good answer, certainly not to him. To me voting feels like it makes you a part of society. And to be deprived of that is the state's way of telling you that you don't count. But maybe it doesn't matter, that you don't matter to them.

What was your friend's reason for thinking that childless people shouldn't be able to vote? And does his reasoning stand for any person over 18 who doesn't have a child?

It is because I have no “skin in the game” and can’t be trusted to think about how my vote will impact future generations

How old is your friend? Do they have kids? At what age? I'd question where this kind of thinking comes from. Just because you don't have kids doesn't mean you can't make decisions while thinking about the good for future generations. And its up to you to decide how you want to cast your vote. So yes, while many childless people may choose to cast their vote thinking about themselves, who's to say other people with kids aren't doing the same. There are so many parents and adults that are selfish and narcisstic and emotionally immature. If I had a friend say this to me I think I'd question whether they themselves are worth being around
