I agreed with him at the time of posting and just got triggered all over again by something I saw so I want to vent in this QT Redditors are good people that make me, a known cheap ass, look positively wasteful. They will pinch a penny beyond all logic. It often results in warped recommendations

it’s truly an unhinged group of people in terms of their relationship to money obviously I don’t begrudge anyone for not being able to afford something, but there is a certain arrogance to the way redditors go out of their way to dismiss more expensive products in favour of amazon/temu slop simply because they are unable or unwilling to buy the more expensive thing. it results in a really twisted world view in which everyone that buys something nice is a fool because you can get this cheaper thing that’s “just as good” even though it’s not. this way of looking at the world has the same appeal as conspiracy theories because it positions you as The One who knows better than everyone else. once you recontextualize most Reddit reccos as being similar to political opinions from someone who uses the phrase “sheeple,” you’ll understand pretty quickly that they’re borderline useless beyond a jumping off point to form your own conclusions.

haha yeah, I think it’s less about being able to afford stuff and more about their shitty attitude which I find endlessly annoying. the other parallel behaviour that I’ve observed which is equally unhinged is the “oh I could make this myself for half the cost.” tldr; the redditor will say “$100 is way too expensive for this, it’s probably $50 in materials” which is like, uhhhh yes it’s a product being sold, there is a margin. are you just figuring out that the world works this way? so then they’ll spend like 8-10 hours building some half-ass version of whatever, which means that they paid themselves ~ $5/hr for that work vs. buying the real thing. and they got something worse in the process since the average person can’t do CNC machining or other industrial manufacturing techniques at home. on a higher level, it’s also interesting that they always ask themselves “how can I save money on this?” and not “how can I make more money?” which is actually a much better question.
