I had a patient’s son last year who was working on self testing stuff for Polycystic Kidney Disease with a group on discord scattered around. The had a printer in Staten Island and a modeling lab in Texas or something lol. She was admitted for complications from Dialysis and her son had just gotten on dialysis at 25yo. Told him if he needed help with anything, would help. Doctors need to be more critical thinkers. It’s a trait that’s gone down hill since we’ve been picking for the wrong qualities in the field.

I think wrong might be too strong a characterization 😅 but rather suboptimal to allow new thought or curiosity. Essentially this translates to a physician willing to practice more top of license rather than within its bounds. The med school selection process, med school itself, then the residency process filter, reward and prize rule/guideline based qualities distilling out anything that falls outside of that norm. Don’t think there’s really a right quality. But rather diversity of thought is the optimal scenario that fosters collaboration of thought which is desperately needed in the coming years. Why I’m more bullish on consumer health and private endeavors vs institutions.
