I mean, I am not even sure it’s a problem. Let’s start there. 😂 I think this is an apocalypse cult on par with climate doomers. It presumes there will never be any positive rate of change ever, over an entire century. I am not sure what I would do but it’s multi factoral problem. I would look at how to address $$ and cultural attitudes Kids are a luxury good and an aspie rant from a bunch of nerds who call themselves live players isn’t going to convince people to give up cushy lifestyles for a baby. To that end factors related to material conditions I hope will self resolve as a factor of declining population and kickstart babies again. Men need to adjust their attitudes towards women. We aren’t as bad as S Korea, but it’s not great. It’s either that or full on subjugate women again which I believe is also possible

I see the parallel w climate both are real issues that don’t look good at all for humanities prospects, both are based on extrapolations that could be wrong but are reasonable, both have doomerism cults tho relatively speaking birthing collapse cult is 1:100 the size but can’t let the doomerism cult get in the way of considering the issue disagree about the luxury good or material argument. We’ve been reproducing in poverty for thousands of years. Euros have tried free childcare, healthcare, college, extended leave and it didn’t make a dent. Needs a belief system. Agree men and women will need to renegotiate relations here on new terms. Return won’t cut it.

Poor people have had kids forever but essentially what we are asking today is for people to downgrade their conditions to have kids. Broadly who has kids today are already poor people or the very rich. People say this is a worthless graph because of cultural factors, and will split out incomes by gender, pick this study apart etc….. I don’t mean to say this is the be all end all but I absolutely reject the idea material conditions aren’t a factor I also think you underrate the power of the pro natalist doomsday cult. I really think they will be a much more successful political influence in the near future. I fear this deeply more than any consequence of TFR It is the tragedy of my life I am not a mom and living with that + threat of them is heavy

The doomerism cult makes me discount this issue because they say “go to space” and not “reconsider how we treat women”. They are not serious people and I get the overwhelming sense they view women as breeders nothing more

this is my point exactly: the prevailing belief system for making this decision is based around upgrading or downgrading "lifestyle" (e.g. marginal free time + money) the wealthy can have kids (caveat: 2.1 vs 1.7 is not that different) while maintaining a lavish lifestyle and the poor are living with belief systems from a prior age (not an endorsement) while make everyone so rich they can afford to have kids without noticeably impacting their lifestyle would be nice it's not going to happen
