Sports is a zero sum game. So focusing on emotion, creating tribalism - the us vs them is a huge element of community building > membership

Disney is doing a pretty cool partnership with NFL this year. Augmented a game with Toy Story characters so kids would watch and get into the sport. I thought this was a great use of tech to make it more relevant and bring new people into the community

traditionally most of the energy would be around "the game", and still is the case but for younger generations the energy is shifting more and more towards digital i.e. behind the scenes video content, video games, even sports betting

It depends on whether it’s exisiting franchise (mostly crossgenerational nostalgia) or new team (a lot of community initiatives).

Check out what LAFC did when launching their team. Really well done ground-up community building. Lots of grassroots, door-to-door community building paired with smart digital tactics.
