Ancient cultures all had big rituals around planting crops. Part of it was of course was to plead to the Gods for a good harvest but... I wonder if part of the calculation was a lot of people just wouldn't plant otherwise? Like a lot of lazy people needed a big party to get out in the sun for 2 weeks and plant?

“Dawn of Everything” has some good content on farming starting as play.

Hmm yeah that makes a lot of sense. It is really fun. Scatter some seeds and stuff comes up that you can eat. We just planted some vegetables with our 3 year old over the weekend and he loved it. Reading the book's Wikipedia entry led me to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlaxcala_%28Nahua_state
