Ancient cultures all had big rituals around planting crops.

Part of it was of course was to plead to the Gods for a good harvest but... I wonder if part of the calculation was a lot of people just wouldn't plant otherwise? Like a lot of lazy people needed a big party to get out in the sun for 2 weeks and plant?

Hmm yeah that makes a lot of sense. It is really fun. Scatter some seeds and stuff comes up that you can eat. We just planted some vegetables with our 3 year old over the weekend and he loved it.

“Dawn of Everything” has some good content on farming starting as play.

I can see that. It's so easy to get caught up in routine doing things that are urgent or at arms length and neglecting the important. A party is something to look forward to and get everyone involved. 

I imagine a similar thought process behind creating specific days to honor someone/something.
