Making peace with the fact that there are areas/markets/subjects/tech I’m not going to understand deeply I have an inability to deeply focus and understand everything - because there isn’t enough time to do so Essentially, by saying no to many areas, you have time to dive deep in areas that matter to you

One way to think of understanding, shallow versus deep: The former is about solving a problem using a tool like an oscilloscope to test circuits. It requires some basic knowledge of circuits. The latter is about being able to understand fully the theory behind how and why oscilloscopes work, and how to improve them

Feeling this one deeply. And I think I’ve been coming to terms that raising a family used up one or two of my 3-4 shots. I had some career success but I had been feeling dissatisfied I didn’t accomplish more. In my mid 40s now and exploring entirely new opportunities and it feels energizing to be on a new path

Such an important skill It's too easy to chase the next interesting thing, leaving the shallows of the last interesting thing, preventing that ability to take the next step into the true depths of the previous pursuit Those depths typically end up being more fascinating than the shallows of the new anyways 🤷‍♂

I find trust plays a pivotal role in this as well while interacting in this space. Of course there tends to be a small minority that is fine with leading others astray. Or perhaps they aren't even conscious of what they're doing.

Yes, but also 80/20 rules implies that you can get to 80% depth in 80% more places with better strategy. Also it might turn out that “figuring out how things work” is a skill that generalizes across multiple (all??) domains and could unlock tremendous leverage.

Understanding this is also a strong leadership trait. I've seen & experienced instances where people take on too many things they have little understating of & can't get out of their own way. As a result, ideas with promise are lost to egos that overshadow the bigger picture
