This makes me think about convergence and divergence in styles of things that are made. There was a time when software was more client oriented I.e. more desktop apps and it led to diversity in styles I feel like. Eventually everything tended to go towards cloud and convergence happened. I do think things will swing back toward a being weird and local on the edges again. It’s just the natural flow of things. The progression of technology, what technology wants to be, what it wants to become. We have a lot less control over our hive technology mind (not in an AGI/ASI way) that we like to give ourselves credit for

This is a bit of tangent, but there’s a couple who live on their sailboat and, needing to conserve electricity, created their own set of lower power-consuming apps. Almost goes without saying but the apps are not cloud-based. https://100r.co/site/tools_ecosystem.html

I’ve spent enough time out of range of cell service to be almost phobic of apps that don’t have an offline mode (e.g. Notion), so I have a special appreciation for desktop apps.

Interesting perspective, but isn’t the push towards cloud and convergence just about optimizing efficiency? The idea that things will swing back to being "weird and local" feels more like nostalgia than a genuine trend.

This is a really great perspective tbh And I completely agree with you about the lack of control over our collective technological trajectory. It's really easy to get caught up in the excitement of new innovations and forget that they're often shaped by complex networks of people, institutions, and interests. But I wonder anything we can do to intentionally shape the direction of technology, or are we largely at the mercy of its evolution?

re: post-globalization: though it's true on the normie plane that things converged into bleak unity, it also helped many developing and underdeveloped parts of the world to meet with accountability in anything from basic consumer needs to public hygiene to health services—slightly hinging on the quoted cast. technology is busy turning us into a cosmotechnique of its own, and it is honestly exciting. i'd not be able to taste it in a pre-globalization period. as eugene hütz used to sing: think locally fuck globally. wow, i missed typing cliché words.

Tech tends to swing between centralized and unique. Early desktop apps were diverse, but the cloud made things more uniform. Now, we’re likely heading back to more local, quirky styles as tech evolves naturally, often beyond our full control. Think we’re nearing that shift?
