I’d like to do my best to read books that I feel are still going to be relevant in 100 years, in a 1000 years

This does not mean I won’t read anything that’ll be obsolete in a few years, or even months, I will definitely do that Just curious about what ideas are going to last the test of time, whether through resonating with us, as we evolve over time, or just by sheer luck (like how Plato & Aristotle survived by chance)

I suggest Harry Potter and Methods of Rationality. My #1 book since 2015

This is actually one area where past success ought to suggest future success (Ie, bc Plato’s work has been a critical part of a critical conversation for 2000 years already, it makes it more likely that it will be part of it for another 2000… *even if* it’s just people disagreeing with it.)

what if you write one? what if people preserve it in a data storage facility that can outlive nuclear blasts across the universe and we will still be reading you in 10K years?

the Epic of Gilgamesh was relevant to Picard, when he and Dathon became Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra

I see you're based in San Francisco. Are you familiar with the Interval in Fort Mason? The Long Now had a similar goal to collect information that would be valuable 10,000 years from now. The Interval is filled with books they think fit that category along with other things. There's meetups too.

Eventhough I don't feel that need (as there is high chances I won't live forever, i'm just happy with books that are relevant to me... At the moment I'm reading them, also pretty sure that none of my favourite books will pass the test of, say, the century), I'm interested in your picking.

I feel the same way. Whenever I'm reading a book that is too focused on current (or past) events this thought is nagging at me the whole time. Not stopping me from enjoying it, but it's something I notice for sure

Just optimistically aim for 1 year. Within 10 years that sight line will be impossible.
