Whenever I’m in Europe I feel sort of culture shocked how superior everything is. I even feel this in England which is allegedly not part of Europe anymore. No insane people on the subway how do they even operate?

i dont get why nyc tolerates crazy people on trains, i live in tokyo and visited nyc last week and got threatened on the C. It was a fullish train and a scrappy tall black dude in red sweats starts pacing the car and rambling about bills he’s gotta pay and money he needs. A minute in he’s starting to get aggressive, “…the FUCK I’m gonna do, you MOTHERF*CKERS!! yall won’t give SHIT!!”, pacing across the car staring people down. The car goes silent, people turn down their eyes, headphones in, pretending to ignore, the girl to my left turns her head into her boyfriend's shoulder scared. People were afraid to move, afraid to look and afraid to talk as he was towering over everyone shouting. I’m not just hoping he leaves me alone but also that he doesn’t mess with anyone else where I have to get involved. After a couple minutes he went to the next car over.

I don't understand why new york and the mta allow this kinda intimidation on public transit. Why wouldn't support for safe subways be critical? These are contained spaces and should be relatively easy to police. What kind of monopoly do they have? It bothers me because safety is so important for families and people commuting from all over from lower income areas, its one of the greatest equalizers.

It makes no sense to me man. Americans are so good at standing up for injustices and have strong opinions on right and wrong and for some reason have such low standards and expectations when it comes to public transit.

The big coastal cities have a lot of Veblen beliefs. One of them is “police bad” This causes the cities to underfund policing and the police are either demoralized or actively corrupt As a result, the minor issues (crazies on the train) fall out of scope The society is fundamentally too polarized to even agree on basic things like “public transportation should feel safe”
