my private keys got hacked over the weekend

woke up yesterday to an empty bitcoin and monero wallet. my family's entire savings just gone. I have no idea how to process it, still feeling like it must be a bad dream

I think that my password manager was somehow compromised, that's the only thing I can think of that makes sense

right now I'm terrified about finances for the next few months. the company I was working for dissolved a few months ago, which wasn't a huge deal prior to getting drained but now I don't know what we're going to do

if anyone in the community is hiring, I would be so grateful for any leads for work. I've been working in crypto for over 6 years. my last role was CTO of a DeFi protocol, and most other roles were developer of some sort. I'd be open to any role even outside of programming, I'm very well versed in the industry

I appreciate it. the majority of funds were Monero and the BTC that was stolen was sent to fixedfloat (where I'm assuming they also moved it to monero as well) so I'm not holding out much hope on recovery unfortunately

yeah it was a bad call, I put off moving things into a multi-sig or at least multiple private keys for too long and now I'm seeing what happens

I was overconfident that my opsec was as good as a paper backup, which in hindsight is a foolishly low bar for the amount of funds I had

it was on a ledger, and that backup seed was stored on a locally running keepass on a device that was only for backing up files

the only thing I can think is that at some point the keepass file backed up to the cloud, though I'm not sure how that would have happened as I don't remember the last time that device connected to the internet

I’m 100% empathetic towards your situation. But isn’t it extremely irresponsible to put your families life savings in a wallet that isn’t multi sig? You’re also storing on a pw manager, that’s also poor opsec. 

Attackers get more and more clever and will always be a game of cat and mouse. Do you have ledgers? Paper wallets? Etc?

so sorry to hear that, it really is terrible and I think that it was a targeted attack as well, I can't find anything that I did wrong on my end and the amount they got was definitely worth extra effort

@jonbray.eth (un)fortunately you are not alone. I got targeted in a spearphishing hack last month as I was packing for Xmas and lost my entire portfolio as well. All my BTC also got swapped to XMR on FixedFloat too and the authorities can’t do anything about it. I’m starting all over from scratch too so hmu if you wanna scheme or vent
