so passkey wallets don't solve the seed phrase problem they just rename concepts. Now Apple, 1Password, etc is backing up your "seed phrase" fundamentally the only people who have eliminated seed phrases are the zk folks who built wallets that can operate on zkp's of other identities

OIDC stuff just moves the pieces around? No matter what there is some auth and some means by which you can lose access to it.

the key is whether the piece is net-new, or something you already custody this is another gotcha that non crypto apps very generally don't have

iCloud, OnePassword, etc. arenโ€™t net new, right? You only lose passkeys if you lose those? Or maybe I misunderstand.

The misunderstanding is that not everyone has iCloud keychain enabled, and certainly some very small percentage of the population uses 1password so the average case is not backed up if we're talking about onboarding a billion people these are the discussions folks need to have...

I disagree. I think the average user far and away is using iCloud, Google password manager, or something like that. Yubikey users etc are rare.

Again, speaking on the scale of the 1B users if the goal is to onboard a portion of the US, sure iCloud backups might be enabled But I guarantee you every single one of those 1B you're onboarding have an email they already custody Given the choice I can't imagine not using email

Roger. If email providers were incidentally effectively custodying millions of dollars of assets, I think weโ€™d see a lot more hacks and account take overs.
