My father-in-law and I used to get into long political debates about Bernie Sanders, who he hated with a passion, and socialism. He grew up in Russia and luckily escaped before the fall of the USSR. No matter how much I tried to sway him towards my position, he would always remind me that his politicians promised the same thing to him when he was younger. And it turned to shit. He would NOT fall for that trap again. I think @dwr.eth’s comment is a good reminder of the personal world view that individuals bring to political conversations. Of course, he’ll never be convinced. His family experienced communism in the worst form. Why would they agree to try it out again? Very much in the same way that many of us, myself included, can’t be convinced that capitalism unchecked is good. Because we have lived through it. The point of political discourse shouldn’t be to convince others to come to your side but to reflect and take in others viewpoints so we can move forward good policy together.

Side note: he passed away this past Spring, and I’d give anything to have another long political conversation with him. There’s a few people that significantly shaped my political views for the better and he was one of them.

The problem is we haven’t experienced “free market capitalism” with it’s positives and negatives for many decades. We’ve experienced this Frankenstein creation of elites/government/central bank/etc. Crypto economies are actually the closest thing to a free market/wild west we see today.

Similar conversations I’ve had with friends whose families escaped Vietnam and Cambodia a generation ago, which got contentious at times but looking back I’m grateful for them. 420 $DEGEN

For you it was cool ideas, for him a brutal life and realization of political lies and manipulation of citizens.

Agreed! People often fall into the trap of absolutes and black or white thinking. It’s like having a really shitty meal, over cooked steak to the point of being inedible or whatever, and then having that be the Platonic representation of steak forevermore. FWIW… Bernie was not/is not advocating for Communism. Free markets alone don’t solve everything and the government does have a role to play in knitting together a basic social fabric to help more broadly cultivate our collective flourishing. IMO.
