When I started my NFT journey, minting my first NFT in April 2021, there was little doubt that I would start with a wildlife shot.

Hawaii has one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet, the Hawaiian monk seal, with roughy 1600 of them left. For more than a decade, I have done volunteer outreach with these seals on Hawaii’s beaches, and a weekly Monk Seal Monday post to raise awareness of these amazing animals.

She was tough too… not just what she survived before I met her in August 2012, but she made international news when she was attacked (while pregnant) by a drunk idiot. She didn’t seemed phased by him at all, and gave birth to a healthy pup a few weeks later.

Well, it’s not all bad news… when I started as a volunteer, we estimated that there were roughly 1100 left. More than ten years later, we now estimate 1600 (and that number has slowly been climbing).

So if we take action, we can see some positive change!

I was once told that she was the ugliest seal in all of Hawaii because of all the scars she has, from the construction scar around her neck to a shark bite on her flank.

However, those scars just made her more beautiful to me because she is such a great example of the type of survivors these seals are.

Yep, people don’t think of seals when they think of Hawaii, but they aren’t found anywhere else in the world.

The original monk seal population was Mediterranean monk seals, and there are only about 800 of them left. A group of these seals left the Mediterranean and established the Caribbean monk seal population (which is already extinct) millions of years ago.

The Hawaiian monk seals were a group of those monk seals that swam to Hawaii before North and South America were connected, and they have remained almost unchanged in Hawaii since their arrival.

She definitely was an amazing seal, contributing pups each year that will ensure her legacy goes on for generations. One of the grand matriarchs of Kauai’s Hawaiian monk seal population.
