Welcome to @jasoncrawford.eth! Jason is the founder of The Roots of Progress, a non-profit dedicated to progress studies. In addition, he has served as an advisor for Our World in Data and as a guest lecturer at MIT. His essay, We Need A New Philosophy of Progress, is one of the best arguments for techno-optimism that I've read: https://rootsofprogress.org/we-need-a-new-philosophy-of-progress/ He has agreed to do an AMA for the /books channel as part of the ongoing Silicon Valley Canon course. Reply with your questions. :)

How do you handle the concern about social media clearly having negative effects on a wide range of people and concerns about AI with your roots of progress approach? (Not saying you can't just interested in your thoughts on it)

All technologies have downsides. Progress has costs and risks. We have to acknowledge them, identify them, and mitigate them—usually, with more progress! Social media has enormous benefits (this AMA being one of them). It's also very addictive, and some people (13-year-old girls?) maybe can't handle it. We need to learn healthy patterns for using it, and the discipline and systems to stick to those patterns, just as we did with television, or with junk food. AI will cause many many kinds of problems, which will need a wide variety of solutions, from product design to law to social morality campaigns. No silver bullet or blanket solution. We just need to identify the ways it can be misused and create domain-specific solutions.
