1/ Let’s Talk About Expectations in the DEGEN Community As we continue building DEGEN together, I think it’s important to address something fundamental: what we should expect from one another. Right now, DEGEN is one of the only platforms where someone can earn hundreds of dollars with almost no authentic engagement—just by reposting low-effort or spammy content. Platforms like Google Ads or Twitter would never allow that kind of behavior to be monetized, and it raises an important question for us as a community: why should we?

2/ The truth is, this kind of farming and value extraction doesn’t contribute to the ecosystem—it dilutes it. When people prioritize spamming over creating meaningful content, the value of the entire community declines. It’s a drain on the people who are here to build something real, and it’s not sustainable in the long term. At the same time, I recognize that we’re navigating this together. If you’re contributing authentically, whether it’s through thoughtful posts, helpful comments, or just showing up and engaging in good faith, you should feel valued here. But to make that happen, we need to set higher standards as a group.

I don’t envy you all at all. I’ve been fighting spam and slop since my first days as a mod on Farcaster and in my own channels. Every time I provide incentives, someone inauthentic shows up. I can manage it because my community is small. I can’t imagine how much work it is at scale. I just ask for clear rules. Tell us what not to do and the community will enforce it. We are really good at guidelines. When there are no true guidelines, we get 91% of active users with Spam labels. We have too many non native English speakers here. We can’t just say “be authentic”. We need concert examples of what is not kosher so they can learn. If they don’t learn, that’s no longer on you.

You’re absolutely right. For a community to grow in a sustainable way, it needs to focus on quality and genuine engagement. Allowing people to earn money just by spamming or posting low-quality content harms the system and discourages real creators. Setting higher standards and supporting meaningful contributions is a great decision. It will create an environment where effort and creativity are truly valued. I fully support this approach, and I’m sure it will benefit the entire community. The rules should also be clear and transparent for everyone.

Very well said. We all have a part to play in this community. Like you said no other platforms would have allowed things that we get away with every now and then here. Abusing allowance and spamming for tips with little to no effort should never be acceptable.

you have to understand that users with spammy scores do not exist solely because of degen. there were and are a lot of other airdrops that were built following $degen's success (masks, build, rare, moxie). many users could got a spammy label just because they participated in other airdrops besides $degen.

I agree but this is how degen is design, so we can t complain about it, i agree it would be better for the community to engage in order to get rewarded why not to have a propser chan for creators art and meme for exemple, then creating great content ( that the community can reuse) would a healthier way to « farm » degen instead of just spamming. Doing this would be cool but i might not be aware of what id take to do it.
