ah these are both great. I'll be teaching an intro to decentralized social in a few months, and I might include your post on this in the readings, if all good w you. I've been in agreement that the word "decentralization" is almost meaningless, at least without further explanations, for some time ... but I still find myself encountering it regularly in the wild (as in this upcoming curriculum "Dweb for creators" lol)

wow I didn't know this about the Quakers, but that's extremely interesting - will have to read more about it! Have always felt a bit connected to them because of the name (Friend) haha

questions for and about decentralized alternatives to big tech originally wrote this in early 2024 for a book chapter but publication has been indefinitely stalled, so dropping it on the blog https://blog.isthisa.com/decentralization-and-its-discontents/

“lifeforms” by sarah friend (@isthisanart) “lifeforms are NFT-based entities. Like any living thing, lifeforms need regular care in order to thrive. If not properly looked after, lifeforms die. A lifeform that has died will no longer appear in wallets, is not transferable, and cannot be brought back to life in any way. How do you care for a lifeform? Within 90 days of receiving it, you must give it away.”

there's a lot one could say about this, but I'm only gonna comment on one part here. As an artist my business is beauty, and while it is very very tempting to think beauty aligns with the good, it's actually amoral. It has its own axis https://mnovendstern.com/TechBrother

I've been learning Chinese and this maps startlingly onto my experience w 漢字. My hypothesis has been that it's related to the same neurological phenomenon that makes the memory palace effective, aka memory is spatial and moving the hand is enough to trigger it https://x.com/prmshra/status/1862532036394983596?t=-2S2nmKPANzHcrDrdF3JKA&s=19

"Protocol art relies heavily on technical literacy and, as a result, is often perceived as hermetic. The blockchain is not a distribution channel for images but rather the material of the art itself." h/t @isthisanart https://worldcomputersculpture.garden/essay

favourite texts about mechanism design, good for introducing an audience to the field? or alternatively, protocols or projects that make good case studies?

Just sharing a selection of the memoryforms minted so far! I love reading what people say about them, and am hoping that over time this can grow to be a collaborative memorial, and leave something permanent onchain even though so many of the Lifeforms themselves were ephemeral 💐 if you cared for a lifeform before Mar 6 of this year, you're eligible to create one - I might expand this to everyone who cared for a lifeform ever but it'll take me a lil while 😅

you can check out the emerging collection here: https://opensea.io/collection/memoryforms the second interaction is a bridge, that moves lifeforms that are older than 1 year from Polygon to Mainnet Ethereum and is a way for a lifeform to "die" intentionally, instead of by disappearing

launched two new interactions related to my long term project Lifeforms yesterday! first is a way to mint a memory of your lifeforms, shaped by how you interacted with them. You can check if you're eligible here: https://gooddeath.lifeforms.supply/

some pics from my presentation about artist DAOs at Sonar Festival back in June I've been experimenting with interactive presentations formats, first at STRP Festival last year where I convened the audience into a DAO and had them vote on which of my artworks I talked about, and now at Sonar, where I actually wrote a lil app where the audience answered quizzes and as well as voting on which examples I should talk about in detail. It's a little bit tiktok npc and a lil bit educational game show. Planning to clean it up and use again in a somewhat different format early next year 🎰 📸: Jean-Marc Joseph
