I was a manager at the time, had a great reputation, was seen as an expert in my domain. someone told me if I wanted to advance, I had to make a shift so I was seen as an authority, not an expert. Subtle nudge, but was really helpful.

Does “advance” necessarily mean going to management or decision making? Isn’t it an advance to become a deeper or different expert? Sincere question, from a form of introvert believing life is learning, and who replaces management and decision making by entrepreneurship. So advancing feels pretty different.

The advice I was given was specific to context of advancement into more senior leadership roles involving direct people management, but you are 100000% right about the many, many fulfilling paths towards deeper mastery.
