I was a manager at the time, had a great reputation, was seen as an expert in my domain. 

someone told me if I wanted to advance, I had to make a shift so I was seen as an authority, not an expert. Subtle nudge, but was really helpful.

The advice I was given was specific to context of advancement into more senior leadership roles involving direct people management, but you are 100000% right about the  many, many fulfilling paths towards deeper mastery.

Does “advance” necessarily mean going to management or decision making? Isn’t it an advance to become a deeper or different expert?

Sincere question, from a form of introvert believing life is learning, and who replaces management and decision making by entrepreneurship. So advancing feels pretty different.

I’ll try. Experts are seen as super helpful and valuable but you don’t get promoted into senior leadership roles by just being an expert. 
I needed to demonstrate ability to set vision, make decisions, and execute on them. Needed to be seen as someone with authority to make decisions.
