It's called gratuity. Meaning you are thankful. Initially meant for a server, usually in a restaurant, that goes the extra mile, gratuity for graciousness. But yeah, it's gotten out of hand. Used to be reserved for waiters, no tips for counter people beyond the tip jar, and certainly no expectation of 20-25%. It's become a social service tax.
