This “tipping” culture in the USA seems identical to the sort of bribery that is endemic to third world nations like India, where you’ll need to slip cash to the electrician you just called for him to actually start working.

If it’s before the meal or service it’s a bribe.

It's called gratuity. Meaning you are thankful. 

Initially meant for a server, usually in a restaurant, that goes the extra mile, gratuity for graciousness.

But yeah, it's gotten out of hand. Used to be reserved for waiters, no tips for counter people beyond the tip jar, and certainly no expectation of 20-25%. It's become a social service tax.

Just make the minimum wage $25 and let every industry sort itself out. Tips would largely disappear.

Tipping culture was bad enough before the pandemic and it's just stupid now. I'd rather servers and delivery people etc be paid a living wage and include that in the price of the food or whatever

Be the change you want to see in the world and don’t tip them.
