wtf is going on with the air industry this is actually insane $170 US extra for this on a $200 flight my parents just booked a flight also where they would have to pay $200pp extra if they wanted their pair of tickets to be together on a flight and not split up…

had a similar situation, booked 2 roundtrip tickets to mexico city from los angeles. economy didn't include assigned seats, you had to pay extra for seats. one round trip ticket in economy at the time was ~$700 with seat. without seat it was ~$400. if all seats were selected at check-in, i would have to wait for next available flight at the airport on standby. having said all of that, the same flight went down to $350 with seat leading up to the flight date 🫠

Airlines barely break even usually on business class or first class They usually lose money on economy These days they mostly make their money on premium economy and seat upgrades believe it or not

Airlines aren't doing well. Domestic Americans ones are ALL losing money. Carriers with int'l flights are subsidizing domestic with their Int'l offerings. They're literally trying to make as much money as they can anyway they can.

200 USD for sitting together would be insane to pay. Even the ~10 or so eur with Ryanair I find ridiculous. I can sit away from my gf for 2 hours no problem 🙂
