And because they’re priceless, it’s hard to sustain yourself by creating them. Even if they’re sorely needed and you’re great at it

in finance they call that "pricing in externalities" while in reality somethings - like those intangibles - are truly priceless

i think the answer isn't necessarily to price everything but i feel like there should be a middle ground between "swallowed by capitalism" and "no math allowed"

Pricing everything is the problem 

Endless growth requires turning everything into a market, which has a commoditizing effect — the river no longer has a life, it’s an input into the Nestlé plant 

Ironically we lose the most valuable things because we’re so hellbent on pricing them

Do we want to? 

Maybe it’s for the best that we only quantify money. Maybe quantifying social interactions leads to transactional relationships. 

I know where you’re coming from, that not being able to price in these externalities degrades some aspect of life.
