Social media has conditioned people to turn to their tribalistic instincts, pushing people further away and less willing to hold civil discussion with "the other side". It's by far one of the worst modern inventions of our time. We still had a free flow of information via message boards, newsletters, and web 1.0

To be more specific, the web 2.0 algorithms that focused more on growth and virality over creating genuine human connections. Facebook being the biggest offender. Feeds went from "Hey this was a cool party we all went too" to pushing angry posts similar to what we saw with news on TV always pushing "BREAKING NEWS"
