This is what I have achieved so far in the cold UK! 
The bananas are wrapped in situ through the winter, and most of the other plants are protected with mulch if needed. The super tender plants are brought into the polytunnel. This photo was from September 2023.

should be obv but nothing i say is financial advice. i have no idea what i’m doing or how i got here, probably added by a third party 

i keep all my plants indoors bc unfortunately i live in a cold climate 😩

if i were to plant my banana outside, do you have to worry about roots freezing in the winter and killing it? that’s kinda been my concern

The reality of growing bananas (Musa basjoo) in the UK through the winter... (assuming you want to keep the height) Wrapping!

Wrapped with straw and fleece, then a rain cap/protection over the top to stop it getting totally soaked and rotting. 

Wrapping stops the pseudostems turning to mush if there is a freeze.

I wrap them through the winter, so none of it freezes. 
They are technically 'root hardy' so will survive a freeze usually, but I wrap them to keep the height into the next year. The stems just turn to mush otherwise! I posted a pic of them wrapped here:

Grew them from 3" pups in the poly tunnel, then planted out when they were about 1ft (so like 4 weeks later 😂 ) then totally covered them up the first year. They will soon get establised in one summer and will be quite happy. They are pretty hard to kill tbh!

hmm interesting im gonna see if i can try it out!! i feel like my little guy is unhappy inside lol

how deep do you plant them initially? mines pretty small but has well developed roots and now has several pups about half the size
