This is dumb. The whole point of McKinsey and Goldman is to increase one’s career trajectory. https://x.com/awilkinson/status/1721216345457700988?s=46

The whole point of a threadors posts is not to make points, it’s to convert the dumbest internet users to their ad-supported newsletters.

Yup. And they are incredible recruiters and trainers so other companies can just mooch off their talent pool

Yeah and it also underrates the value of higher volume of hours. Like there is no option to double your hours if you want more cash flow at $100k job. Not saying either choice is inherently better or worse, but this is a misleading comparison.

Not sure if I can generalize, but my peers who helped startups grow 0-10 maybe be better at solving business puzzles than my peers who are consulting at McKinsey and etc

I agree. It totally misses the point. Andrew usually has thoughtful takes so I’m not sure what happened here.

Compensation is more than just salary Experience/knowledge/access are just as valuable (if not more valuable) than raw salary, especially for people new in their careers. Goldman gives you those forms of compensation at 100x the rate of working as a light fixture salesman or whatever

Agreed, no one does it to maximize $/hr. Many do it because they believe they will get to have the most impact and work on meaningful projects. Though, I can’t speak to the extent of which that happens.

i hate those comparisons. imagine trying to breakdown the value Kobe Bryants’s achievements because he spent too many hours. this silly approach discounts all of that. i’ve never seen a “super star” born out of strict 9-5.

Okay but why it's dumb? The calculation is true, even if you work for comparatively not-so-good hourly wage to get better hourly wage & career opportunities later.

I don't think is a dumb take. It's just his perspective. For people with similar points of view, it makes sense. One thing I have come to realize and be in harmony with is that a lot of people don't take life as seriously as some of us. They are just fine with being just fine.
