Relative to their impact on both WWI and WWII, German U-boat strategy seems underweighted in discussions.

@dariustg get in here. You've been on my ass about it the last few years. TLDR is that a big turning point was military leadership not providing more ressources and cutting it off as it was uber efficient in keeping supply lines to the UK honest

I think it is important to mention the advantages first, the submarines were relatively easier to build than, for example, a battleship cruiser etc. and could evade the fight with the royal navy which was clearly superior as well as build up pressure on the merchant ships that supplied England

Also under discussed is that the Kriegsmarine parked some U-boats in New York Harbor during the war

i also think it depends on the discussions. within military contexts i'm sure it's frequently discussed as a case study in securing logistics routes, but average people don't really think about these things while the human element of infantry stories are much more palatable another reason, beyond the lack of a good cinematic anchor, is that the situation was resolved through somewhat illegible means from my understanding, the u-boats were a menace to the atlantic shipping routes, and specifically the transport of oil from america to britian. but when we broke the codes and developed long-range bombers + radar thanks to advancements in engineering and petroleum refinement, the issue was abated. sort of a boring and anticlimactic story of just grinding technological innovation the closest representations i've seen to this are the aircraft subplot in dunkirk or the imitation game, both of which were popular but not culturally impactful in the way that saving private ryan or band of brothers was

fundamentally superior tech & strategy poorly understood by more traditional powers, required enormous advancements in allied technology to counter study the first and second "happy times" & US vs German approaches to industrial production at the time

There are old U-boat watch towers on Fenwick Island, Delaware. U-boats caused so much damage. You make a very good point!
