i also think it depends on the discussions. within military contexts i'm sure it's frequently discussed as a case study in securing logistics routes, but average people don't really think about these things while the human element of infantry stories are much more palatable another reason, beyond the lack of a good cinematic anchor, is that the situation was resolved through somewhat illegible means from my understanding, the u-boats were a menace to the atlantic shipping routes, and specifically the transport of oil from america to britian. but when we broke the codes and developed long-range bombers + radar thanks to advancements in engineering and petroleum refinement, the issue was abated. sort of a boring and anticlimactic story of just grinding technological innovation the closest representations i've seen to this are the aircraft subplot in dunkirk or the imitation game, both of which were popular but not culturally impactful in the way that saving private ryan or band of brothers was
