live with Justin Kan: “I actually recant that tweet [attached]. If you don’t have a great product, you’re fucked and distribution doesn’t matter. The more accurate is second time founders care about product AND distribution but that doesn’t sound as good.” Product + distribution > product > distribution

Most of what I’ve seen called “growth” from dev day is really product and not at all about distribution i understand focusing on building a product that has clear differentiation/PMF but FC/WC disregards distribution to an extent that’s pretty surprising for a social product

ah, i see so imo Justin Kan would actually say that’s the disciplined and right approach: focus on nailing the product before you focus on distribution because “if you have a bad product, you’re fucked” seems a waste of resources to me to focus on distribution before you optimize product

Do you think FC/WC is a bad product? My main criticism relative to distribution is that FC/WC has not made it easy to onboard people or give power users/builders the right tools to help them do that

Our problem is retention, not onboarding. Solve retention, onboarding becomes the problem to solve.

Potential network effects are basically neutered which isn’t ideal for retention or onboarding Is retention the top priority right now?

Interesting. Was retention a problem last quarter or are you measuring it on a longer scale (from the time of degen and frame hype)

unstructured thoughts incoming sry thought 1: have you considered the equivalent of a 'tutorial island' for new users? almost like limiting their visibility of OG casters to ones that specifically opt in, helping them from immediately hitting the spam filter thought 2: i think a lot of whether or not you stick around here is dependent on whether you managed to find your people or not (disregarding the other bits like initially feeling like you're casting out into the void etc.) power badge basically worked as an indicator of who to interact (or not interact) with, and i was thinking maybe with these new channel changes it might help to have 'new to X channel' badges for some set days (7/14/30) so that they're 'highlighted' and more of an effort may be made to help them integrate and learn?

you can build around a topic or on people currently it’s focused on people which means people leave if no engagement
