PSA Clearing up a few misconceptions 1. Casting in your home feed gives you the same distribution as casting in a channel. 2. Everyone can read and reply to casts in channels 3. Most people will appear above the fold with a reply. 4. We changed the way channels work to shift them from hashtags to communities. 5. If you’re annoyed by the changes, just cast in your home feed. You’re not missing out on distribution or discovery casting in a channel.

Super helpful A question you've likely been asked but I've been pondering for days: How do you view the value of following a channel (if by following the channel/community you don't see any more posts in your feed than if you were to just follow the people)? What incremental value can/does a good channel provide?

I am still very puzzled by (1). Can you elaborate on this? Maybe I have the wrong mental model for it. What is the point of channels if channel members who do not follow me won't see my casts (i.e. no distribution boost)? 🤔

I think a better approach would be: - restore channels to how they used to be - add a new concept "communities". Let the 2 things co-exist and compete in nature and then kill the weaker one. Communities are totally different than channels. I don't think there's any fixing that. Just create a separate concept and restore channels

I’m not mad. But the behavior of casting in channels was a thing for me, now it just feels weird and my brain hasn’t moved on from the “discovery boost.” Even tho I know it’s no longer true.

Another potential improvement: Allow people to cast in channels they’re not part of but then it’s pending approval till an admin allows it. I think Reddit has this option for subreddits that want it.

Thanks for the clarifications. It's interesting you keep coming back to distribution. I never really saw channels as primarily distribution, for me they were about putting casts in front of the relevant audience. Being shut out of several channels now limits that behaviour, so I'm still adjusting.

To 4) I know you and the team have been saying “channels were hashtags and we’re changing that”, how sure are you that your user base also saw them as hashtags? Just seems to muddle all mental models. If channels were hashtags, wouldn’t a better solution have been…hashtags?
