1. Value of Google search is in being the default for most people (thus the $20B they pay to Apple) 2. How do ads work? If the AI is giving you the best answer, the ads don't matter. If the AI is giving you an answer influenced by an advertiser, why won't you use a competing service. 3. All that said, existential issue for Google If only in that it forces cannibalization, esp. as multi-step agents get better, e.g. "research flights and hotels in miami for a trip in January"

The new, "AI search" does not have to be as profitable as Google. I bet every AI company today would be happy to be 1/10 of Google at some point. I think AI search engines will be more like travel agents, and less than travel ads. A good agent doesn't show you ads, they also sell trust and expertise. And get commission or charge a markup.

Google Search has a lot of verticals. Perplexity Et al. are starting with more answer/knowledge verticals and gradually expanding (i.e. finance). It's a matter of whether Google can modernize and take advantage of their distribution before others "catch up" and people's habit switches from checking Google to checking ChatGPT or Perplexity.

Queries with "answers" aren't especially monetizable. It's the queries with purchase intent where the $$$ lie.

Where we once said “Google it”, all of my kids say, “search it up” — the brand recognition (and preference) is long gone. An article I came across this morning connects a couple dots: as Google serves up their website-trained AI responses, website content creators evaporate, leaving Google‘s models with less material to work with. Moreover, as traffic declines overall, sponsored clicks become worth less, driving revenue down and advertiser cost up (higher competition for fewer clicks due to a lack of better channels). I've had chatgpt search on the openai app for a while, but not on mobile - that said i still used google quite a bit - as it could still retrieve things quicker for me. i really (really) tried to use bing and I swear that it intentionally gives you bad results so you'll keep hitting the next page to up its numbers.

Perplexity is already doing exactly that headline says just you can choose other models. Gross reality if paid influence over result is invisible to user. I would 100% exit to clean model & agent if given a choice
